Thermal Envelope
A High-Performance-Home (HPH) is a purpose built structure comprised of various systems. One of these systems is "the thermal envelope" The thermal envelope begins at the sill plate and encompasses the exterior wall assembly. through the use of new materials and techniques the thermal enevlope ensures a home's energy efficiency by a significant amount. A successful thermal envelope provides a thermal and air barrier between the inside and outside environments.
Exterior walls must be air sealed, protected from moisture, and insulated to do their job. By doing this the home owner will realize increased comfort, reduced outside noise, and savings on energy costs.
Air sealing will greatly improve building durability, reduce heating and cooling costs, and create a healthier interior. Exterior wall assemblies are susceptible to moisture incursion, and must be protected from it. The design of exterior walls should allow moisture that does get in to the home get out and at the same time keep moisture out. A complete, lapped and drained moisture barrier beneath the exterior surface is the only way to accomplish this.
The most cost effective ways to control energy consumption and make for a year around comfortable living environment has always been well placed, properly selected insulation.
The average American home looses 30% of its heat and air conditioning through its windows and doors.
Windows and doors, improperly installed and poorly selected are the largest holes in the thermal envelope.
